SUMMARY:Approaches to Environmental Scanning
DESCRIPTION:5 June 2026\n8:30 AM – 5:00 PM PDT \nWhat is Environmental Scanning?\nThe environmental scan is an assessment tool to prepare a group to do further work\, such as strategic planning or making significant decisions. It includes relevant factual data such as an organizational or community history\, accomplishments\, industry and/or economic trends and subjective data such as customer\, staff or community perceptions. In following the environmental scan with a planning process\, the analysis of information about real and perceived needs provides a basis that will assist in strengthening later sessions. \nAn environmental assessment or other preparation activities can help participants gain insight into factors that may be driving or influencing their organization or community. It is essential for a group to know and understand the significance of these influences before it can start the planning process. For example\, such preparation creates a common context for creating a vision for the future. When used as the first step in Participatory Strategic Planning an appropriate form of environmental assessment helps focus the planning. \nThere are many ways to approach an environmental assessment. You will be introduced to multiple approaches to environmental scanning: \n\nCurrent Trends Conversations – Brief and Extended Versions\nEnvironmental Context Overview and Situation Assessment Frameworks\nCooperative Study of Quantitative Data\nThe “Wall of Wonder” Environmental or Historical Scan\nThe Wave Paradigm Inventory\nStrategic Juncture Analysis\nComprehensive Screens: Plotting a Snapshot of an Organization\n\nThe course will demonstrate some of the above tools with your participation. Others of the above tools will be reviewed. This one day training expands on the Preparation and Design Section of the ToP Participatory Strategic Planning Course. \nThis training deepens and expands upon the Preparation and Design Section of the ToP Strategic Planning Course. \nWho Should Take This Course?\nPeople who work with groups that need high-levels participation and who are preparing to enter into strategic planning or moving through a major organizational change. \n\nManagers and supervisors\nExecutive directors and board members\nFacilitators\, trainers and consultants\nEducators and health practitioners\nActive citizens community leaders\n\nPre-requisite Course\nPlease note that ToP Facilitation Methods is a pre-requisite \nFor more information contact Stacey Daraio at stacey@strategicfacilitation.com or call at 415.987.0467. \nREGISTER HERE at the ICA website.
